- Inhibit the production and effectiveness of estrogen, the female sex hormone.
- Support muscle protein synthesis and reduce inflammation for faster recovery.
- Increase your basal metabolic rate so you burn more calories even at rest.
Testosterone and Natural Decline
You don't have to look far on the internet to find infographics showing catastrophic aged related testosterone loss. Normally from companies selling testosterone boosting supplements or TRT.
And if you were to believe some of them then you have literally no testosterone left at all by the age of 80.
It is not as bad as they make out. Research(1) into age related decline in healthy men shows that levels of testosterone tend to drop off around the age of 40 at a rate of 1% a year. For Joe Average, he will still have 60% of his youthful testosterone levels if he reaches the age of 80.

As always - the devil is in the detail though. Joe Average might be fine, but take a look at the table above(2).
The variance between the high and low levels is huge. A 2006 large scale study of 2162 men over 45 years of age visiting primary care centres in the USA showed that the prevalence of hypogonadism was 38.7% (3).

What are normal testosterone levels?
That question is not as simple as you might think.
Testosterone levels vary from person to person and are determined by factors such as age, genetics and pre-existing health conditions.
The benchmark normally used is 300-1,000 ng.dL, so if you have your hormone levels tested and your testosterone is shown to be lower that than bottom end of this range then you would be formally diagnosed with hypogonadism.
I have Low Testosterone.
Testosterone is produced by the Leydig cells in the testes. There are two forms of hypogonadism;
Primary Hypogonadism
The source of the problem is in your testicles. The Leydig cells are receiving the impulses from your brain to produce testosterone, but they are not doing so.
Reasons for this form of hypogonadism normally relate to health conditions rather than lifestyle. Genetic and autoimmune disorders and infections are the likely culprits.
Secondary/Central Hypogonadism
The source of the problem is not in your testes. Your testes are normal, but they are not receiving the messages sent from your brain which tell them to produce testosterone.
Whilst genetic disorders, diseases and infections can be the culprit here too, lifestyle choices are normally more of a causative factor. Obesity, nutrition or drug use/misuse can interfere with the ability of the brain to communicate with the testes.
